Run a marathon in the 'Land of a Thousand Islands'
The midnight
sun in the firmament, humpback
whales in Disko Bay and great support from all the citizens of
the town; these are just some of the ingredients that make up the
event every year in June when Aasiaat Midnight Sun Marathon is
held.
The marathon route itself runs four times around the town and out
to the airport. The route follows tarmac roads running over gentle
hills. The marathon always takes place during the latter half of
June so that runners can experience the midnight sun.
On the day after the race there's a celebration with dinner for
the participants featuring dancing and live music. This is a
festive event in which the whole town comes to the arena and mixes
with the participants.
Out on the airport road there's a view of Disko Bay, where you can
see the icebergs and
humpback whales, which in the summer months like to swim close to
the town when foraging in the bay.
As a runner, you'll be "accompanied" by the midnight sun, which in
previous years has shone brightly in the sky. In addition to the
classic marathon distance, you can also choose to run a half
marathon, 10.5 km, 5 km or 3 km.
