Reasons to go on a Cruise

See Greenland from the sea

Greenland has a unique culture and nature, magnificent wildlife and endless coastal stretches with glaciersice sheets and deep fjords with calm waters. Towns and settlements are spread out all over the country unconnected by roads or railways. You can therefore only get from one place to another by sailing or flying. Seeing Greenland from the water is the best way to see the world's largest island, and of course the best way to spot whales or see the massive icebergs up close.

Sailing is a journey in itself

A cruise ship is like a floating, comfortable home that each day brings you to a new location, a new experience and a new destination. Depending on which company you choose to travel with, a cruise provides the chance to see a lot of different places in Greenland within a relatively short space of time. Longer cruises in Greenland are also possible, typically expedition cruises to places such as Qaanaaq. However, this means of transportation is definitely not about getting around as quickly as possible; sailing is a relaxing way to travel, where the journey is an experience in itself.

Experiences and insight onboard and on land

Professionally qualified personnel onboard the ships provide information about Greenland en route and offer advice as to what is worth seeing - depending on your personal interests and wishes. Once ashore you can meet local guides who can tell you about everyday life in Greenland - for example at Ittoqqortoormiit in East Greenland, which has made it a point of honour to involve the local population, schoolchildren and public institutions when expedition cruise ships call at port. Seeing a foreign ship is still an exotic event in the remotest parts of Greenland!

Varied range of culture and excursions

Perhaps you would like to see  Viking ruins in South Greenland or to be a guest at a kaffemik held by a sheep farmer's family? Perhaps you would like to fly by helicopter to the ice sheet at Ilulissat, sail to the Icefjord or go on a tour of the town - maybe all three things on the same day? The cruise ship companies work closely with local travel agencies and other relevant parties and are therefore often able to present a wide range of cultural experiences and excursions at each landing site.

Eat well and meet other travellers

Cruise ships usually schedule their calls at port for the morning, after which you can go ashore for anything from a few hours to a whole day. This enables you to eat lunch ashore and have your evening meal onboard the ship in the company of your fellow travellers. The surroundings are familiar, the mealtimes regular - if you wish - but what you experience on dry land varies from day to day.
