Things to do

South Greenland is a hiker's paradise. You can hike to the ice sheet from Narsarsuaq and then with a short boat trip to the settlement at Igaliku or from Qassiarsuk to Tasiusaq, which is a short trip, alternatively, to Narsaq which is a longer and more demanding trip. A boat trip to the icy fjords or Qassiarsuk sheep farm, known for its historical Norse ruins and reconstructions of a Norse house, is a must. You can also fish, row, kayak and mountain bike.

The inlets at Narsaq are good for kayaking. Become one with the sea and the sky, but be careful because the water is cold. But if you don't go sea kayaking in Greenland, where do you? The kayak is a genuine Greenlandic invention, which together with the harpoon and needle has been the most important survival tool. Particular challenges are icebergs which turn over and break off from time to time.

Depending on when during the summer you fish, char can be fished in both saline waters and in freshwater rivers. Fishing typically takes place in the mouths of the rivers or at the boundary between a lake and a river. Generally speaking, char are found where the concentration of food is greatest, the water is deep enough to cover their dorsal fins and where the water is relatively still.

Narsarsuaq is one of the few places in Greenland where the Ice Sheet is within walking distance. After a couple of hours hiking and climbing, the Ice Sheet emerges, big and powerful. Or on foot through the fertile "Blomsterdal", (Valley of the Flowers), where south Greenlandic sheep farmers grow grass for winter fodder. Narsarsuaq is a good starting point for countless of hikes, which are often combined with both boat trips and the chance to visit Norse ruins.

Narsarsuaq is a good starting point if you wish to get an insight into the history of the Norse settlers. Sail to the island on the opposite bank and visit the reconstruction of Erik the Red's farm, Langgård, and Thodhidur's Church. It's incredible to think that the Scandinavian settlers arrived in South Greenland more than 500 years before Columbus even set sail from Europe. The Norse settlers made homes here and established farms and agriculture.

From the late summer to spring, you don't need to rely on luck to see nature's lavish explosion of colour on the night sky. The greenish hues wave in a sea of light, gently, gently over Narsarsuaq. It is easy to understand how the Greenlanders of the past could have seen the Northern Lights as a mythical and mystical phenomenon.

Around the mouth of the Qooroq fjord, colossal icebergs run aground. In the fjord itself there are thousands of icebergs with steep rock walls and in the bottom of the fjord is the large glacier which releases around 200,000 tons of ice every day. The icebergs are far from silent - they creak and roar as they rotate and crack.

Narsarsuaq is one of the few places in Greenland from which the inland ice is walking distance. You need to be in good physical shape, but you will be richly rewarded for your efforts after a couple of hours' trek. The view of the ice sheet and the possibility of touching a piece of the enormous ice cap outweigh everything else. Less strenuous is a trip by boat to the Qooroq glacier, sailing between the countless icebergs.

You often come across animals in the wild. At sea, on land and in the air. Seals swim all the way along the Greenlandic coastline and 20 different species of whale live in the waters around it. In the fjords of Narsarsuaq there are whales and the surrounding area is inhabited by reindeer, arctic foxes and arctic hares. The raven is perhaps the bird you will see most frequently out of the 50 different species in Greenland, while the majestic sea eagle is a rarer sight.
