The area around Qasigiannguit is ideal for hiking, and during the winter it's also possible to get around on ski. One of the hiking trails runs for 30 km north to the Icefjord. However, it isn't possible to cross the fjord by foot over the icebergs in order to get to Ilulissat, although of course the sight of them can be enjoyed from the south bank of the Icefjord.

Qasigiannguit has a rich history and is one of Greenland's oldest towns. Discover the country's oldest wooden house from 1734 and get an insight into Inuit culture as it was at that time. In Disko Bay you can see Inuit house sites, kitchen middens, arrow slits and other exciting traces of the past. The ancient legends and myths are still sources of inspiration to many young artists and musicians. Today, they are merely reflected in new and modern forms.

The voyage from Ilulissat to Qasigiannguit offers the chance to see huge icebergs, the largest of which is grounded on the submerged moraine. Ringed seals and Greenland seals are a common sight, and then of course the many whales. Observe the graceful humpback whales, which are very common in Disko Bay during the Arctic summer. You can also go fishing at Strømstedet on the mouth of Salmon Bay.

Midnight sun means that the sun does not set north of the Arctic Circle and remains above the horizon during the summer.

To sail between icebergs of all sizes is experienced by only a few. Imagine taking the tour from Ilulissat to Qasigiannguit in sunshine and a clear blue sky. It's all about not getting too close to the giant ice-dinosaurs, but the captain knows all about that. The locals know the icebergs by their sound and shape, and when an iceberg rotates no one is in doubt for a second as to its strength and power.

Dog sledges dominate Qasigiannguit's landscape in winter. Discover the hinterland and ice-covered sea from behind a band of running dogs. In West and North Greenland the dogs are secured to the sledge in a broad fan shape, suitable for driving on sea ice and hard snow. This differs from East Greenland where the dogs are secured like carriage horses, which is better for driving in deep snow.

Qasigiannguit boasts Greenland's oldest house, which dates from 1734 and now functions as the town's museum. The area is a goldmine for those with an interest in archaeology and history, as this is where they will find traces from several settlements dating back thousands of years, in the form of empty houses, meat graves and hunters' hide outs. Traces from the very advanced Saqqaq culture have also been found. Articles from this time are displayed in the museum.

An unspoiled and magnificent area, reached by ship from Ilulissat. Naturally you shouldn't go hungry in such fantastic surroundings, which can also produce hot summers up to 30 degrees! What better way to spend a hot summer's day than with a BBQ on the terrace at Hotel Disko Bay? The hotel's restaurant primarily serves Greenlandic specialities such as musk ox, reindeer and fish.

The dog sled trip at Qasigiannguit includes a special experience when the Northern Lights are surging across the sky. So you just have to lie back on the warm reindeer skin and enjoy the creaking of the snow as the colours unfold against the dark sky.

Experience humpback whales and fin whales. You stand a good chance of seeing these in Qasigiannguit. But you might also see sei whales and Greenland whales, also known as arctic whales. This latter species spends all its life in arctic waters, as opposed to the other species that often seek out new areas to breed and feed.

You often come across animals in the wild. At sea, on land and in the air. Seals swim all the way along the coasts of Greenland and 20 different species of whale live in the waters around it. There are lots of whales in Qasigiannguit. If you are lucky, you might also spot arctic foxes and hares. The raven is perhaps the bird you will see most frequently out of the 50 different species in Greenland, while the majestic sea eagle is a rarer sight.

Cruising around Greenland gives you the chance to see icebergs large and small, whales at play and impressions of life in towns and villages. Sit out on deck on one of the deckchairs and just enjoy the view. And when you disembark, visit the local museum, the village hall, church, weather station, police station and residential home for the elderly. Here at the edge of the world's largest national park, you have no end of experiences to enjoy in the great outdoors.

The trip from Ilulissat to Qasigiannguit offers great experiences. Immediately after the ferry has sailed out of the port of Ilulissat, you have the mouth of the Ilulissat Icefjord on the port side. Huge icebergs of all size and shape are found here at the "iceberg bank". A little further south it is just possible to make out the contours of the village of Ilimanaq, which is the oldest inhabited settlement in Greenland.
