Come for "kaffemik" or explore one of the small settlements near Ilulissat. If you are lucky, your trip might include a Greenlandic meal. The Greenlandic food culture is closely linked to the traditional, old and deep-rooted social community of the sealers. Food and meals therefore remain a central part of the special Greenlandic hospitality to this day.

Boats and ships sail from Ilulissat port to settlements along the coast, glaciers and Disko Island. Take a 15 km voyage to the settlement of Ilimanq, south of the Icefjord and discover whales and giant icebergs. Take an evening voyage among the amber coloured icebergs in the midnight sun. Sail out to the settlement of Rodebay and eat lunch at the cosy restaurant. Sail to Eqi and get close-up to an active glacier.

Icebergs of up to 100 metres in height tower white and proud above sea level right outside Ilulissat. An outstanding sight, which captivates anyone who is given the chance to experience these natural masterpieces. The icebergs run aground at the mouth of the fjord, where it is just 250 metres deep. After melting and degradation, they glide out of the fjord on course for the Atlantic.

Greenland from the seaward side treats you to icebergs in all shapes and sizes, playful whales and a glimpse of life in the towns and settlements. Relax in the lounger on deck and enjoy the view. Once you have docked, you can visit museums, take a helicopter ride to the Ice Sheet, or there might be a planned mask and drum dance, kayak display or choir concert going on. Experience the busy harbour life, with its motley collection of small multi-coloured motor boats and red fishing vessels.

The dogsled continues to play an important role as means of transportation for hunters out hunting. Hunters also like to take tourists on the trip. You can choose between day trips and week-long sled trips, sleeping in cabins. On Lyngmarks Glacier on Disko Island, as the only place in Greenland, you can dog sled in the summer - even in the midnight sun. The dogsled in West and North Greenland is different from that in the East. Here the dogs are harnessed to the sled in a broad line, adapted to driving on sea ice and hard snow.

The highland in the mountains behind Ilulissat offers a variety of hikes.  11 km into the hinterland lies the Nalluarsuk Hut. It takes a good day's hiking up and down and round the lakes before you reach the large Nalluarsup Tasia Lake. The trip to Sermermiut is shorter. In this protected area traces have been found of the first humans who lived in Greenland approx. 4,500 years ago.

When Arctic Palerfik takes place, it's a sign that winter's drawing to a close. Join the year's last dogsled trip into Ilulissat's beautiful white hinterland. In the summer there's orienteering on the programme. Arctic Midnight Orienteering is both an Arctic championship and the unofficial Greenlandic championship. The event takes place close to the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord.

If you don't go sea kayaking in Greenland, where do you? The kayak is a genuine Greenlandic invention, which together with the harpoon and needle has been the most important survival tool through the millennia. In Ilulissat and Disko Bay - as elsewhere in Greenland - the kayak has undergone something of a renaissance. Become one with the sea and sky and enjoy magnificent experiences in the slender little vessel.

Ilulissat is a modern town, but the Inuit culture is not forsaken. The ancient legends and myths are still sources of inspiration to many young artists and musicians. Today they are expressed in new forms. The town's choirs perform at special events - often dressed in beautiful national costumes and traditional drum and mask dances can be arranged for the town's guests.

Ilulissat is home to two exciting museums. Ilulissat Museum is also Knud Rasmussen's birthplace and provides an interesting insight into this great explorer's life and numerous expeditions.  The Inuit Art Museum contains a large collection of paintings by Greenland's probably best known painter, Emanuel A. Petersen. Over 100 paintings by Greenlandic, Faroese and Danish artists are exhibited here.

All towns in North Greenland arrange town tours with a guide. Often the tour passes by the fishermen at the harbour, and you experience the atmosphere of the market. Lend your ear to the amazing tales of polar adventurers Alfred Wegener in Uummannaq and Knud Rasmussen in Ilulissat, where he has his museum.

At several restaurants in the cities of North Greenland, the level of ambition is sky high, and many visitors leave the country with great culinary experiences. In the gourmet kitchen at Restaurant Ulo, in Ilulissat, the country's best chefs conjure with the finest ingredients of meat from seals, reindeer, musk ox, lamb, fish, and birds. Try the hot BBQ on Hotel Disko Bay's terrace in Qasigiannguit, gourmet on the mountain in Aasiaat, delicacies at Uummannq hotel restaurant or at the settlement restaurant in Rodebay.

The beautiful jewellery, animal skins and handicraft objects in Ilulissat's shops provide a glimpse into an ancient and proud culture, where every corner of nature's gifts were utilised with an eye for quality and beauty in the detail. It is a tradition that lives on in many of the quality objects you are tempted by as a tourist.

The helicopter is made for the Greenlandic landscape, and to go aboard, climb into the sky and experience the ice, glaciers and deep valleys from the air is an outstanding experience. You are aware of everything, the landscape, sky and sea. In North Greenland, especially the helicopter tours along Ilulissat Ice Fjord are known and loved by many. Helicopter tours in Greenland come in several varieties, and you essentially have three options: Take a scheduled flight, an organised tour or charter your own helicopter.

The neon signs in Times Square and Piccadilly Circus pale into insignificance when compared to the dance of the Northern Lights across the skies near Ilulissat. The giants of the Ice Fjord in their weird and wonderful shapes of blue ice reach up towards the sky, forming nature's own scenery for the dance of the colours.

Midnight sun means that the sun does not set north of the Arctic Circle and remains above the horizon during the summer.

The period of midnight sun in Ilulissat is from 27th of May to 18th of July.

The inland ice is a must for tourists in Ilulissat. By helicopter, dog sled and walking boots it is possible to get right up close to the gigantic ice sheet and get an impression of its magnitude and the loud creaking it makes. Take a boat ride to Pakitsoqfjorden and wander through the arctic landscape to the inland ice.

Join a whale safari and experience humpback whales and fin whales. If you're lucky you may also meet the Greenland whale, because as the sea ice breaks up it heads for Disko Bay to look for food. It lives mainly on animal plankton and moves in line with the ice melting. The Greenland whale stays in Disko Bay during the spring months and leaves in mid May, heading for Canada.

Seals swim everywhere along the coasts of Greenland, and on a cruise, you can see them show up. Whales are easier to spot. Northwest Greenland has a long and proud tradition of whaling, and 20 whale species live in waters of Greenland. The opportunities to see them frolic in the waters are high. If you are lucky, you can spot walruses in Uummannaq and far north polar bears - but usually only after they were killed. Approximately 50 species of birds breed in Greenland, 160 species are just on a summer visit.

You cannot talk about Ilulissat without mentioning the icebergs and on every coastal voyage to and from the town it is guaranteed to encounter the enormous blue and white ice giants on their way from the Icefjord to the oceans. Disko Line runs the local services between the towns on Disko Bay, while Arctic Umiaq Line runs the passenger traffic between towns and villages along the shores from Ilulissat in the north, to Qaqortoq in south.

A number of years ago many of the local fishermen in Ilulissat in Disko Bay earned their daily keep on the frozen fjord. Today there are fewer, as the harbour is often free of ice during the winter. When the fjord is frozen, good fishing holes still attract local fishermen. You therefore still have the chance to experience this traditional form of winter fishing and see how the fishermen pull up one Greenland halibut after the other.
