Sisimiut is perfect for dog sledding and there are numerous trips to choose from, lasting from a couple of hours to several days. Try the three-day trip to Kangerlussuaq, staying overnight in whalers' cabins and tents. You can get close to the dogs all year round, and listen to stories about these diligent animals that have, for over 1000 years, been bred as one of the strongest working dog breeds in the world.

In Sisimiut - Greenland's second largest town - it's life in the fast lane. Also on a snowmobile. The undulating landscape behind is perfect for trips to the hinterland. Driving on the flat stretches across the Spejder Lake feels like flying. But be careful - there are many other snowmobiles out there, and snowmobiles must give way to dog sledges.

Take the trip to the top of "Kællingehætten" in Sisimiut and you will enjoy a fantastic view of the town, sea, mountains and the deserted settlement of Assaqutaq. Or maybe you would like to climb up Præstefjeldet?The journey upwards is through a sea of greenery consisting of bushes, flowers and moss. Small waterfalls are also plentiful, so keep your water bottle handy.

Covering 160 kilometres over three days, Arctic Circle Race has been called the world's toughest cross-country skiing race. Compete in the event and experience both endless snow landscapes and the huge warmth and helpfulness of the many volunteers who every year since 1998 have made this race a must for skiers from all over the world.

Depending on when during the summer you fish, char can be fished in both saline waters and in freshwater rivers. Fishing typically takes place in the mouths of the rivers or at the boundary between a lake and a river. Generally speaking, char are found where the concentration of food is greatest, the water is deep enough to cover their dorsal fins and where the water is relatively still.

The area surrounding Sisimiut provides excellent opportunities to zigzag down mountain sides where no one else has skied before. The season runs from mid March to the start of June, with "powder" snow being a prerequisite early on in the season and "corn" snow at the end of the season. From the end of April the midnight sun enables you to ski at all times of the day and night.

Be among the first to explore the secrets of the sea in Sisimiut and surrounding areas. Deep down in the ice cold water await colourful nature dives, current dives at full speed or diving for wreckages. The trips consist of a combination of dives and living on board the boat, which departs for several days. Safety is a high priority and all vessels are of course approved by the Danish Maritime Authority.

Sisimiut has its own kayaking club and sometimes you can see its members paddling and practising kayak rolls. The conditions are ideal. If you don't go sea kayaking in Greenland, where do you? The kayak is a genuine Greenlandic invention, which together with the harpoon and needle has been the most important survival tool. Modern touring and sea kayaks can be hired.

The area around Sisimiut has been inhabited for over 4,000 years. Discover traces of past settlements and ancient Inuit culture in the town's museum. Discover contemporary culture at the culture-centre, the school and around town. The ancient legends and myths are still sources of inspiration to many young artists and musicians. Today they are expressed in new and modern forms.

The Sisimiut Museum has an exhibition on Inuit culture and everyday life during colonial times. There is particular focus on seafaring history, with a display of the remains from one of Greenland's oldest kayaks, a women's boat and dinghy. The museum offers some good activities based on the try, feel and understand principle. Sisimiut also boasts a culture house with concerts and visiting exhibitions.

Experience Sisimiut, which means "the inhabitants at the foxholes". The town is the second largest town in Greenland. A state-of-the-art shrimp and crab factory testifies to the fact that fishing remains the main industry. Go on a guided tour of the town with a guide who knows all the good local stories. Visit the town's beautiful church and the museum, which occupies old buildings from the 18th century. Drop into the Sisimiut Cultural Centre.

Restaurant Nasaasaaq, gourmet restaurant and the town's most popular place on Sunday mornings. Sunday brunch has become something of a tradition and the guests come back again and again. The restaurant's menu features specialities with lamb, reindeer, musk ox, fish, seafood and poultry, and perhaps potatoes and turnips grown in Southern Greenland. And in Sisimiut, the chefs magic the country's soul into the delicious dishes.

Many of the locals sail during the summer, and there are excellent opportunities for the town's guests. Take a trip to the abandoned settlement at Assaqutaq. In the summer it is a popular recreational area for Sisimiut residents, and the settlement is popular for drying the funny little fish - amasetter. Take a voyage and enjoy a platter of Greenlandic delicacies. Maybe you'll spot wintering flocks of seabirds that lay to rest at sea.

During the winter months, the Northern Lights can regularly be seen in the skies over Sisimiut. Legend has it that the beautiful celestial phenomenon is due to the souls of the dead playing with a walrus skull. There are other more down-to-earth explanations, but it is easy to understand how people's imagination could get the better of them when the Northern Lights are dancing their beautiful dance.

You often come across animals in the wild. At sea, on land and in the air. Seals swim all the way along the Greenlandic coastline and 20 different species of whale live in the waters around it. Sisimiut has abundant wildlife including musk oxen, reindeer, peregrine falcons, whales and walruses. The raven is perhaps the bird you will see most frequently out of the 50 different species in Greenland, while the majestic sea eagle is a rarer sight.

Greenland from the seaward side treats you to icebergs in all shapes and sizes, playful whales and a glimpse of life in the towns and settlements. Relax in the lounger on deck and enjoy the view. Once you have docked, you can visit the local town, or there might be a planned mask and drum dance, kayak display or choir concert going on. Experience the busy harbour life in Greenland's second largest town, the motley collection of small multi-coloured motor boats and trawlers and fishing vessels.

Welcome aboard! It is almost guaranteed to see whales and icebergs, and the coast and countryside's dramatic encounter with the sea, the mountains and fjords are an amazing sight to behold. Along the coast are towns and villages facing the sea that has always been the main source of income for the population. Arctic Umiaq Line's passenger ship sails between Ilulissat in the north and Qaqortoq in south.

Go on a fishing trip in Sisimiut. The trips take place from boats which are usually allowed to drift or are secured at anchor. You can fish for the popular redfish and cod. Experience has shown that cod fishing is best between islands, at locations with fast-moving currents and at the mouths of the fjords. There are also often good chances of catching cod close to glaciers and at outlets from the Ice Sheet.

Ice fishing is a traditional way of fishing in the winter - especially for Greenland halibut - and such trips are on the programme in Sisimiut. Take a dogsled out to the good fishing holes and catch the main ingredients for your evening meal. It's a special experience to pull the long line with many fish up from the cold depths of the sea. They look pretty scary with their sharp teeth, but they certainly make a tasty meal.

Go hunting with a local outfitter. Several outfitters have specialised in taking hunters on a trophy hunt. The outfitters take care of everything - from dealing with the prey when it's been shot until the trophy is cleaned and packed ready for transport. Live your dream and come home with a trophy of one of Greenland's iconic mammals - the reindeer or the musk ox. The trophy goes to the trophy hunter, whilst the meat becomes the property of the outfitter.

Midnight sun means that the sun does not set north of the Arctic Circle and remains above the horizon during the summer.

The period of midnight sun in Sisimiut is from 18th of June to 22th of June.

Skiing on the fjords, lakes, hills, slopes, pistes, mountains - and on the Ice Sheet itself. Meticulousness, gentleness and strength are typical features of the many Greenlandic products originally only produced for hunting, everyday use or special occasions. It is still the same today, and crafts, clothes and kitchen utensils exuding Greenlandic culture are sold in several shops in Sisimiut. The old red warehouse at the harbour is also a hub for local artists.
