Come summer, it is time to get away
When the snow starts to melt, those of us living in Greenland start to anticipate the intense Arctic summer.
The locals cannot wait to sail into the fjords and spend time away from everyday life. Many Greenlandic families have their own traditional spaces for hunting and gathering; it is time for relaxing, being with friends and loved ones.
It is time for hunting and fishing. For foraging for berries, herbs and mushrooms that will last all winter. It is time to enjoy the simplicities of life.
A life and sail away from the city
Just a few hours sail away from Nuuk centrum lies a small settlement called Kapisillit. There, 70 people live a life that is completely different from the capital city.
They wouldn’t have it any other way. There’s an intimacy to a small settlement, where everyone can know each visitor by name. You can take stay in refurbished huts especially designed for rent or homestay with families.
Spend time with the locals, pick some berries, or go for long hikes filled with brilliant vistas of the ice cap. You can even hike to the ice edge located about 10 km away from the settlement.
Or with the help of tour operators, you can opt to visit settlements that are even smaller.

Fish and Dish
There are also many local holiday spots including a few popular holiday areas for the locals such as Qooqqut and Kangerluarsunnguaq. If you like fishing, or just love eating fresh fish, try the concept of Fish and Dish.
Set in the popular holiday hut area of Qooqqut, in the surroundings of Nuuk, one can have the chance to fish in the deep sea. At the right time of the year the streams are teeming with trout skipping upstream. You can try and catch one with a rod or with your hand!
For a more simple hut, go completely off the radar and stay at Kangi Ski Center. Here, the huts are set an hour’s walk from the coast. An hour away from the city, a lifetime away from the normal routine of life.
You will have to rely on satellite radio, so connecting with the outside world is only done in emergencies. With the midnight sun or the silence of the snow, time will lose its meaning. We promise you that you will feel refreshed. Wouldn’t you like to have that break too?
