Local transport

Greenland by sea and by air

No trains and no roads between the towns
In Greenland there are no roads connecting the towns, so all transport takes place by plane or by ship. The Arctic climate, which at times can be extreme, places great demands on safety during transport, demands which Greenland’s transport companies satisfy in full. When travelling over shorter distances outside the towns the local population use their own boats, dogsleds or snowmobiles.

Travelling by air
Air Greenland, Greenland’s airline company, handles a large percentage of passenger transport in Greenland with its four-engined Dash-7 planes and various types of helicopters. The Dash-7 can carry up to 50 passengers and typically cruises at a height of 4-5 km (13,000-16,000 feet), which provides a fantastic view of Greenland’s ice sheet and glaciers. The helicopters operate primarily between the towns in the south of the country, as well as servicing the towns in North and East Greenland and the small settlements.

Travelling by ship
Another normal way of travelling in Greenland is by ship. The passenger ship Sarfaq Ittuk from Arctic Umiaq Line plies a regular service between Narsarsuaq in South Greenland and Ilulissat in North Greenland during the period from April to December. During the summer season it is a good idea to book your tickets well in advance.

The North Greenlandic shipping company, Disko Line, operates in the Disko Bay area with several small, but well equipped vessels. You can order your tickets here: www.diskoline.gl
