The town at the “rugged place”
Maniitsoq fully lives up to its name, which means “the rugged place”. Deep, narrow fjords and some of the highest mountains in West Greenland are typical for the area, which also has a large population of whales, which swim right up to the coast close to the town.
Maniitsoq is also surrounded by an impressive archipelago, where many of the town’s almost 3,000 inhabitants have built hunting and weekend cabins. A sailing trip on Hamborger Sound, north of Maniitsoq, is a breathtaking experience in a sheltered sound where the smooth, flat waters represent an attractive contrast to the region’s jagged mountain peaks.
