Maniitsoq

Maniitsoq by Signe Vest
The town at the “rugged place”
Maniitsoq fully lives up to its name, which means “the rugged place”. Deep, narrow fjords and some of the highest mountains in West Greenland are typical for the area. Maniitsoq is also surrounded by an impressive archipelago, where many of the town’s almost 3,000 inhabitants have built hunting and weekend cabins. A sailing trip on Hamborger Sound north of Maniitsoq is a breathtaking experience in a sheltered sound where the water is smooth and flat in contrast to Maniitsoq’s jagged mountain peaks.

Attractions around Maniitsoq
In the area around Maniitsoq you can go angling in the summer, take a hike or a sailing trip to the glacier-filled Evighedsfjord (The Fjord of Eternity) with its 2,000-metre (6,500 feet) high mountains. The area around Maniitsoq is ideal for kayaking and for many years has also been considered to be one of the most exciting and challenging skiing areas in Greenland for both alpine and cross-country disciplines. The area offers fantastic opportunities for skiing on the extensive mountainous and glacial areas north and east of Maniitsoq with the chance to try heli-skiing from March to the end of May and ski-touring, which can be done at all times of the year.

Maniitsoq’s history
Archaeological remains reveal that the area around Maniitsoq has been inhabited at different periods throughout the last 4,000 years. Maniitsoq’s museum, which is housed in four buildings from colonial times, has a fine exhibition of objects from these finds.

One of the museum’s buildings consists exclusively of exhibitions of art and handicrafts from the Maniitsoq region: Paintings, sculptures carved in whale tooth, bone and soapstone, as well as other arts and crafts.

How do I get to Maniitsoq?
Air Greenland flies to Maniitsoq via the international airport in Kangerlussuaq. In addition, there are several flights a week from Maniitsoq to Nuuk and Sisimiut, and the municipality’s three settlements are regular ports of call for combined freight/passenger ships. Arctic Umiaq Line's passenger ship, which sails along Greenland’s west coast, also often calls at Maniitsoq. Enquire at your travel agency for timetables and frequency.
