Uummannaq is a typical North Greenlandic town with all that that entails: Summer with midnight sun and floating icebergs; winters with ice-covered fjords and fantastic views as far as the eye can see. The area offers activities all year round.
Example of activities
By boat to a historical site
At the old settlement of Qilakitsoq, which is a short trip by boat from Uummannaq, eight particularly well-preserved mummies dating back to around 1475 AD were found in the 1970s. Today several burial sites can be seen at the site and the museum in Uummannaq houses a special exhibition of the finds and copies of the mummies’ clothing.
Play golf between the icebergs
Every spring Uummannaq is the venue for the World Ice Golf Championship. Golfers from all over the world compete on the fjord ice between the trapped icebergs on a nine-hole course, four rounds of which must be completed in two days. The ‘greens’ are white, the golf balls orange and you need to take warm clothing with you, but you are guaranteed an unforgettable experience.
Wildlife safari on the fjord
From the middle of July until autumn a whale safari is a popular attraction, providing a chance to get close to the giants of the sea. The skipper knows just where to find the whales and depending on the period there are excellent chances of getting really close to minke whales, humpback whales, fin whales or killer whales. The fjords also contain many bird cliffs with thousands of breeding birds, and it is also possible to visit some of the many settlements in the area.
