Qeqertarsuaq is the only town on the enormous island in Disko Bay, and the – for Greenland – quite unique natural conditions provide plenty of attractions for those who love the great outdoors.
Examples of activities
A hike with an experienced local guide
Disko Island is an old volcanic area characterised by distinctive mountain formations of basalt. Basalt is porous and good at retaining moisture, which is why the natural surroundings in the area are very fertile with a rich and varied flora. The guide will take you to spectacular waterfalls, hot springs, beautiful viewpoints and lead you through green valleys and over the fells. Hikes are organised that last anything from a couple of hours to trips lasting several days during which you will be staying overnight in abandoned settlements.
Dogsled trips at the height of summer
At a height of 800 metres above the town is Lyngmarksbræen, where it is possible to ride on a dogsled throughout the summer. The hike to the top takes a couple of hours and can be quite challenging at a couple of places. However, once you have reached the top, you will be rewarded with a fantastic view of Disko Bay, and if the weather is clear you will be able to see the large icebergs at Ilulissat 100 km away. At Lyngmarksbræen there are one or two huts, so you can choose to stay for a day or two after the dogsled trip.
