Qasigiannguit is one of Greenland’s oldest towns, and a rich ancient history and friendly landscape offer exciting attractions for any visitor. There are, of course, activities during both the summer and winter seasons.
Examples of activities
A journey through Greenland’s history
At the town’s museum the guide will show you some of the thousands of objects that have been found at archaeological excavations in the area. These excavations provide evidence that the area was one of the first inhabited areas in Greenland more than 4,500 years ago. The museum is housed in old buildings from colonial times, and it is also here that you will find Greenland’s oldest wooden house from 1734. In Southeast Bay, which can be reached by boat, it is possible to see ruins of Inuit dwellings, kitchen middens, weapon slits and other exciting traces of the past.
By boat in the wake of the hunters
Situated west of the town is the island group Kitsissunnguit/Grønne Ejlande, which for centuries has been a popular site for hunting during both summer and winter. On the islands you can see old tent rings and ruins of turf houses, and many families still go to the area in the summer to hunt seals, seabirds and collect eggs.
By dogsled under the northern lights
It is possible to take a trip by dogsled in the area as early as December, and the many extensive valleys and frozen lakes mean that trips here are not so physically demanding. So it is just a question of leaning back on the warm reindeer skin and enjoying the creaking of the snow whilst the northern lights dance across the night sky. Another possibility is to accompany a fisherman fishing on the ice for Greenland halibut or catfish in Disko Bay. If you are looking for a change of pace, you can also hire a snowmobile.
