Ittoqqortoormiit is in Northeast Greenland close to the border to the National Park and is a rather small town with limited infrastructure. As a result the town does not receive many visitors, but those that do come are guaranteed unique experiences.
Examples of activities:
Kayaking in the world’s largest fjord complex
The huge Milne Island lies in the middle of the fjord complex, and kayaking around the island is a popular excursion. Large granite mountains are succeeded by dramatic gorges in sandstone fells, and you may also meet narwhals and walruses en route. Once back on dry land there are good chances of encountering oxen and reindeers, whilst polar bears also roam the area, although there is no guarantee that you will actually see one.
On a dogsled trip with a hunter
During the spring the sea is frozen and the dogsled thus becomes the hunter’s means of transport to the hunting grounds. Such a hunting expedition can last several days. It will be necessary to stay overnight in a tent or a hunting hut, and food is prepared over a primus stove. You need to be in good physical shape and have the will to want to experience a different type of adventure; the dish of the day may be seal, fish or whale. If you wish to up the pace a bit, it is also possible to set off on a snowmobile, although snowmobiles may not be used for hunting. The traditional hunting techniques are upheld in this way.
