Ittoqqortoormiit

Broad horizons and endless scenery
Ittoqqortoormiit is located at Scoresby Sound, which with its ancillary fjords is the largest fjord complex in the world, as well as being the world’s longest fjord. The population of Ittoqqortoormiit lives in the town itself, whilst there are no longer any permanent residents living in the two nearby settlements of Itterajivit/Cape Hope and Uunartoq/Cape Tobin.

A range of easy and demanding activities
Only a few tourists visit this outlying region where the winters are long and the sea is frozen for nine months of the year. Those that do come, however, are guaranteed a journey in which they do not run into many other people. The Ittoqqortoormiit area offers trophy hunting, expedition-type trips by sea kayak or dogsled, as well as more comfortable sailing and hiking trips. The wildlife in the National Park north of Ittoqqortoormiit is quite unique and consists of numerous species of mammals and birds, in addition to which unique species of animals can often be spotted in the immediate vicinity of the town.

The area also offers good conditions for skiing in the virgin terrain. After an exhilarating ski run, you can dip your feet and cold hands in any of the numerous hot thermal springs and lakes that are also characteristic of the Ittoqqortoormiit region.

Ittoqqortoormiit’s history
Ittoqqortoormiit, which was previously called Scoresby Sound, is one of the youngest towns in Greenland and along with Qaanaaq the most remote. The town was founded in 1925 by two newcomers from Tasiilaq at the request of Arctic explorer Ejnar Mikkelsen. The reason was that Tasiilaq had become too big, particularly in relation to the number of seals available for hunting. The Ittoqqortoormiit area was already known for its good hunting grounds for seals, walruses and polar bears, and hunting today remains the major occupation along with tourism.

How do I get to Ittoqqortoormiit?
The journey to Ittoqqortoormiit takes place with Air Iceland via Reykjavik, Iceland, from where there are generally two weekly flight connections from the end of March until the end of October, and one weekly connection during the rest of the year. Several expedition cruise ships also call at Ittoqqortoormiit. Enquire at travel agencies that feature Greenland on their programme for more details.
