07.03.21 - New possibilities for overnight accommodation in Igaliku

South Greenland’s idyllic settlement of Igaliku, which has just 50 inhabitants, will soon be able to offer better facilities for staying overnight in Blue Ice Explorer’s new hostel, which can accommodate 16 guests.

By Malik Milfeldt

The company took over the hostel at the turn of the year and is well on the way to completing the redecoration and fitting out of rooms and common areas.

Igaliku, which during the Viking Age was called Garðar, is famous for its attractive Norse ruins. Due to its location between Narsarsuaq and Qaqortoq/Julianehåb it is an ideal steppingstone for a tour of South Greenland.

From rooms for four to double rooms
Compared to previous years, Blue Ice Explorer’s hostel is able to offer more privacy to overnight guests, as the company now has a total of eight double rooms with shared bathroom and toilet. Earlier the hostel was able to accommodate 26 overnight guests, primarily in rooms with four beds.

The hostel has a small cafeteria, from which Greenlandic delicacies such as reindeer meat, prawns, scallops and other fruits of the Arctic seas and fjords are sold.

Adjacent to the hostel, Blue Ice Explorer can also offer overnight accommodation in seven small huts, which have also just been acquired. The huts each have a size of 15 m2 with two beds and an option of an extra bed. There is a service hut with a bathroom and toilet, whilst the three main meals of the day can be bought at the hostel’s cafeteria. The huts provide hotel guests from surrounding towns with a good chance of being able to experience life in the settlement.

New excursions and sailing routes
As a consequence of the improved accommodation facilities, Blue Ice Explorer, which is based in Narsarsuaq, is intensifying its sailing programme and the number of departures between Narsarsuaq and Igaliku. The owner of Blue Ice Explorer, Jacky Simoud, also expects to be able to introduce a brand new regular route between Igaliku and Qaqortoq/Julianehåb.

The route will make it possible to go on a round trip on the fjords of South Greenland between Narsarsuaq, Igaliku, Qaqortoq, Narsaq and back to Narsarsuaq. Overnight accommodation en route can be organised, and a visit to Greenland’s best-preserved ruins from the Norse period – at Hvalsey Church - will be included in the plans for the new sailing route.

Jacky Simoud expects that the Igaliku hostel and new excursion products will be ready in time for this year’s summer tourist season, which commences in May or June. Read more at Blue Ice Explorer’s brand new website at www.blueice.gl
