07.02.25 - Final countdown for US-Greenland route to open

With less than 100 days to go before the first direct route to Greenland from the US, managing director of Greenland Tourism & Business Council, Stig Rømer Winther, announces that tourism industry in Greenland is well prepared for receiving Canadian and US citizens from May 24.

- Tour and excursion operators, hotels and restaurants are ready and still looking forward to the launching of the route and the coming season. The direct flight from the United States to West Greenland could become a great leap forward in developing tourism on our unique Arctic island, Stig Rømer Winther expresses from the tourism council's head office in Nuuk, one of the smallest capitals in the world.

Five hours flight to a Polar environment
Air Greenland sales manager Per Karlsmose stated earlier this year that the airline carrier hope to serve adventurous travellers from Baltimore's hinterland to take the fairly short 5 hour flight to experience a Polar world with a gigantic ice sheet, midnight sun and a unique Inuit culture.

The 57,000 inhabitants nation receives app. 33,000 tourists a year, mainly from Northern Europe. But with the new route, the annual figure is expected to increase in the coming years, as North Americans get a taste for adventures in the Arctic.

Travel example:

Glacier Heaven: Ilulissat
- 5 days/4 nights

With Ilulissat as your base, you'll be able to overlook a glacier that produces about 20 million tons of ice per day - enough to supply New York City with water for a year. Take boat excursion through waters choked with icebergs of every imaginable shape and size. Or follow in the footsteps of great explorers like Knud Rasmussen who was born in Ilulissat.
