The seas around Greenland and the endless tundra are home to some of the world's most hardy wildlife. From the solitary and powerful polar bear, which wanders several thousand miles every year to the rare and beautiful snowy owl, Uri has managed to capture fascinating and intimate portraits of all of the animals that inhabit the Arctic region.
Arctic Light represents a fascinating and refreshingly up-to-date view of one of Greenland's greatest treasures - its beautiful nature - as seen through the eyes of Greenland photographer Uri Golman. Its nature is brought to life through a collection of more than 100 new photographs, and it is clear that these pictures are the result of several years of dedicated and serious work. Many hours have been spent on dogsleds and on the water to capture the beautiful light in the landscape.
- Producing this book has been an adventure from start to finish, says Uri Golman. I have taken photographs in Greenland since 2001 and have been captivated by its fantastic scenery since the very first day I landed in Kangerlussuaq. Winter quickly became my favourite season due to its unique atmosphere and the fantastic light that is generated when the sun lies low in the sky.
- I have sat or lain in the snow in bitterly cold temperatures on several occasions waiting for the right light or the movement of an animal and found myself wondering what I was doing there. But every time it's been the same: it's always ended up as an unforgettable experience.
- And when you sit in the hut or in your hotel room in the evening, you can feel genuine tiredness creeping up on you - the type of tiredness you only experience following physical exertion in the great outdoors at a place where e-mails, telephone calls and daily routines seem to be several thousand miles away.
- Here in the wilderness you meet nature on its own terms and you are able to find your inner self; indeed, the peace that exists within us all is able to come to the fore.
The many beautiful full-size photographs make Arctic Light the perfect book for anyone with a relation to Greenland and interest in the Arctic region, in addition to which anyone interested in the future of the climate of our planet will have their horizons extended.
