08.10.01 - Air Iceland to open new route to Ilulissat in 2009

The Icelandic airline Air Iceland will be opening a new route from Iceland’s international airport, Keflavik, to Ilulissat from next year, according to an announcement made by Managing Director Árni Gunnarsson to greenland.com in conjunction with the travel trade fair Vestnorden Travel Mart, which was held in Reykjavik in September.

At the same time, Air Iceland announced that the company would be increasing the number of departures between Keflavik and Nuuk by one extra departure per week, such that next summer Air Iceland would be offering no less than 4 weekly services.

Air Iceland is flying to Greenland

- We are experiencing great demand when it comes to Greenland, and for us it was therefore logical to fly to Ilulissat, which offers a lot of attractions for tourists and other travellers, explains Árni Gunnarsson to greenland.com

- Air Iceland now covers all key regions in Greenland with our five destinations and we feel that flying to Ilulissat is a natural step due to the fact that passenger figures on the other Greenlandic routes have been very satisfactory, concludes Árni Gunnarsson.

Air Iceland's service to Nuuk has been more or less sold out throughout 2008 and the airline has experienced a 20-25 percent increase in the load factor on the Narsarsuaq route in relation to last year.

In addition to Ilulissat, Air Iceland also flies to Nerlerit Inaat/Konstabel Pynt, Kulusuk, Narsarsuaq and Nuuk.

The route to Ilulissat will be flown by one of the company's Dash 8 aircraft on Wednesdays and Saturdays during the period from 1 July until 2 September.
