The propagation of reindeer in Greenland

In Greenland there are both wild reindeer and domestic reindeer. The majority of wild reindeer live in the area from Paamiut to Uummannaq and near Qaanaaq, whilst in South Greenland domestic reindeer are kept in two areas.

Most reindeer live in the area between Nordre Strømfjord and Paamiut, however.

There are considerable fluctuations in the sizes of the various populations. A very large population in the 1980s led to overgrazing of the land, with a significant reduction in the population as a result. For several years reindeer were therefore protected, but during recent years hunting has resumed for recreational hunters, trophy hunters and commercial hunters. Hunting takes place during the autumn and in certain areas also during the spring. Hunting helps to regulate the populations so that overgrazing can be avoided in the future.

In 2006 the number of reindeer throughout Greenland was estimated to stand at more than 100,000 animals.
