Trophy hunting in Greenland

Unique opportunities for hunting on the world’s biggest island

Distant travel destinations and exotic wildlife are on the wish-lists of many trophy hunters. The dream of a unique hunt for one of Greenland’s iconic land-based mammals such as the reindeer or the musk ox is just a 4½-hour flight from Denmark. In West, South and East Greenland you have the chance to go on a trophy hunt accompanied by authorised hunting guides.

Greenland is a huge country and the wildlife is free to roam in the landscape. There are no fences or artificial boundaries – only the natural surroundings and your own fitness define what’s possible. Your guide can of course make a qualified guess as to where animals can be found – but whatever the circumstances, you should expect to be active and it’s highly recommended that you’re in good shape.

Seal hunting and contacts
In East Greenland you also have the chance to go seal hunting. Contact the Nanu Travel tourist office in Ittoqqortoormiit for more information.

There are trophy hunting guides in all of the major towns in Greenland. In Nuuk, for example, you can contact the firm 64° North in the shape of Lasse Nymand or Jan-Erik Pedersen, in Sisimiut and Kangerlussuaq you can try Inuit Outfitting personified by Mathias Ingemann or Johanne Beck, whilst in South Greenland (Ivittuut) Per Nukaaraq Hansen is the man to contact. If you’d like contact information for those mentioned here – or others you may have heard about – you’re welcome to get in touch with Greenland Tourism and Business Council, info@greenland.com.

Three good pieces of advice from trophy hunting expert Ervig
- Call out to the animal to attract its attention just before firing. Hide behind a stone and use a white handkerchief to get the animal’s attention. Reindeer are curious by nature and will mistake a handkerchief for the hindquarters of another animal. Reindeer can only see the world in black or white.
- If you wish to have the reindeer coat from your kill conserved, then August is the best month of the year to do so with respect to the quality of the fur. If you shoot the animal at the end of September, the coat can still be used, for example, to hang on the wall, but cannot be used as a rug.
- When on a hunt during the winter, put a piece of electrician’s tape or gaffer tape on the muzzle of your gun to prevent snow, dirt or other foreign bodies getting into the barrel. You can fire the gun with the tape on, but test fire it before you try this trick in an actual hunting situation.
