Polar Circle Marathon

An extreme marathon
Just a short distance north of the Arctic Circle you can participate in an exciting marathon adventure and enjoy the fantastic ice sheet and breathtaking Greenlandic scenery. The Polar Circle Marathon throws up a quite unique way of meeting “the wall”, which in these parts consists of ice that is several million years old. The marathon thus takes runners out on a very unusual route from Kangerlussuaq to the edge of the ice sheet, where the enormous tongues of ice dominate the landscape.

Run on ice and land
The Polar Circle Marathon is run on the ice sheet itself as well as on tundra, frozen lakes and through an Arctic desert where musk oxen and reindeer live on the barren slopes. As the marathon route is hilly, has a range of different surfaces underfoot and takes place in fluctuating temperatures, it is appropriate to describe it as extreme. You should therefore expect this marathon to take at least 25 per cent longer than your normal marathon time.

Take the family with you
The Polar Circle Marathon provides a good excuse to bring a band of cheering supporters made up of family or friends. A detailed programme ensures that both runners and spectators will have plenty of opportunity to see and experience Greenland’s fascinating nature during the days before and after the marathon itself.
