Snowmobiling

The dog sled’s modern successor

Trips in never-ending snow-covered landscapes
Most of Greenland is covered by snow during the winter months, and there are thus fantastic opportunities for snowmobile enthusiasts.

For many people in Greenland the snowmobile has assumed the role of the modern successor to the dogsled. The vast majority of hunters, however, have chosen to stick to the traditional sleds and in certain cases hunting is not allowed on snowmobiles. The snowmobile is therefore first and foremost a vehicle for recreation and leisure.

Snowmobiling does not always go hand in hand with dog sledding, however, and in the municipalities in which there are sled dogs, there are often rules stipulating that snowmobiles may not be driven on traditional sled tracks and routes.

Renting of snowmobiles in Greenland
Snowmobiles are typically rented out to travellers during the winter season, which runs from November to February or March depending on the amount of snow. From Kangerlussuaq you can also take up the extreme challenge of driving 200 km (125 miles) across the ice sheet to a former American radar station, DYE-2.

At Sisimiut it is possible to take a snowmobile trip accompanied by a guide or to drive out to a hut in the middle of the magnificent scenery with an overnight stay included. This is also possible on Lyngmarksbræen near Qeqertarsuaq. The towns of Aasiaat, Maniitsoq, Kangerlussuaq and Narsarsuaq also have snowmobiles available for rent.
