Heli-skiing in Greenland's unspoilt fells

World-class heli-skiing near Maniitsoq

The fantastic view of the glacier-covered islands and the sea (Davis Strait) is a major part of the whole skiing experience in this area.

Virgin terrain

The heights of the tops of the fells range from 700-1,500 m, whilst in the Fjord of Eternity a few of the mountains rise more than 2,000 m into the sky. The difference in altitudes on the various 'ski runs' ranges from 600 to 1,500 m (4,500 feet). The terrain is suitable for skiers of abilities ranging from those who have limited experience to real experts, and is equally suitable for both skiing and snowboarding.

The season runs from the middle of March until the beginning of June with 'powder' snow conditions at the start of the season and 'corn' snow as the season draws to a close. From the end of April the midnight sun enables skiing at all hours of the day. The area has a stable covering of snow with minimal chances of an avalanche.

Heli-skiing is also possible in East Greenland and depending on the season near Uummannaq. Tour operators are often based abroad and it¹s therefore easiest to 'Google' the operators of such tours to see where and when you can go heli-skiing.

In this region the huge glacial areas extend all the way to the coast and cut through the largest area of alpine fells on the west coast of the country. The ski slopes are located on some of the biggest islands in the region and alongside some of the deepest fjords, which in many places are covered by glaciers. At several places it's possible to ski all the way down from the top of the fells to the water's edge.

Since the mid-1990s adventurous skiers have regularly made the trip to Maniitsoq in order to ski. Initially, the region was primarily the preserve of professional skiing teams and film companie

s, but since the year 2000 Maniitsoq Tourist Office and a number of professional heli-guides have combined forces to organise heli-skiing trips near Maniitsoq.
