Flying Helicopter

There are three ways of experiencing a flight by helicopter during your stay in Greenland: You can either use a scheduled service, go on an organised tour or charter your own helicopter.

All helicopter flights are carried out by Air Greenland. Helicopters fly at low altitude, and this provides a completely different experience and perspective than when flying in a plane high above the clouds.

Scheduled services
Scheduled flights in Disko Bay and in South Greenland take place on a Sikorsky 61, which can carry up to 24 passengers, and at Tasiilaq on a Bell 212, which is able to take 9 passengers. During the summer season there are usually several daily departures on weekdays. Tickets can be purchased at ticket offices in each town.

Helicopter excursions
In Ilulissat, Narsarsuaq and Tasiilaq there is a chance to go on an organised excursion with a guide. These excursions fly to the Ice Sheet and once the helicopter has landed, there is plenty of time to enjoy the view of the Ice Sheet and the glaciers. Trips last from 30 - 40 minutes to several hours, and the price of course depends on the flying time. There is only one company in Greenland that offers helicopter flights, Air Greenland. Concact the local tour organizers to get more information. 

Helicopter charter
If you have particular wishes, such as being transported to a remote trout river or similar, it is possible to charter a helicopter from Air Greenland. Helicopters are available in several sizes that can take from 5 to 24 passengers. Heli-skiing by means of chartered helicopter is very popular in the area around Maniitsoq during the spring.
