Greenland sled dogs

A dog with a unique pedigree
The Greenland sled dog has a unique pedigree due to the fact that for thousands of years it has not been cross-bred with other breeds of dog. The dog has simply adapted to arctic conditions to such an extent that other breeds of dog are not allowed in the so-called sled dog districts in Greenland.

A proud animal needs discipline
Perhaps because of its unique background, the sled dog is a proud and independent dog. However, this proud animal must never be left in any doubt as to who ultimately decides speed and direction. The key to training a good sled dog is therefore discipline.

Related to the wolf
The sled dog is a direct descendent of the wolf and cannot bark, but howls instead. It has adapted to the arctic world, and is therefore very hardy and robust. A good sled team, which normally consists of 12 - 15 dogs, can run with several hundred kilos of fish from the fishing grounds to the factory.

The sled dog is a tool
The sled dog is a tool for the catcher. It must not be confused with a pet, although the owner and his dogs are often very closely attached. So although sled dogs are usually very affectionate, as a rule one should never approach a sled dog or a team of dogs without the owner’s permission or without the owner being present.
