Fishing equipment

Fishing for the char
If you are fishing for char by means of a rod, a spinner is the most effective method, for example with 8-foot long spinning rods with a casting weight of 10-20 grams (0.35-0.7 oz.) and a medium-sized fixed reel equipped with 0.25 mm nylon line.

Good equipment makes a difference
However, it is not difficult to catch the char by fly fishing. The most common method is to fish downstream with a wet fly. As the char tend to remain at some depth, it can be a good idea to weight the fly or use a sink line to get the fly closer to the fish.

The speed of the fly is important. Particularly sluggish fish can be tempted to react by accelerating the fly by tugging rapidly or by letting the current take the fly line and with a rapid tug accelerating the fly out of the dead water. Regardless of whether you choose spinner or fly, the Greenland char are well-known for putting up a good fight.

Hunting the ocean’s big game
A bait rod with multi-reels and a bait of 40-450 grams (1½-16 oz.) is good standard equipment for sea fishing of, for example, cod. Handheld bait lines are used a lot locally, but require patience when the line has to be reeled in from depths of several hundred metres.
Cod can also be caught direct from the coast with a spinning rod and bait weighing 12-18 grams (0.4-0.6 oz.).

The large Greenland shark can grow to a length of 6.5 metres (21 feet) and weigh up to 600 kilos (1300 lbs). It therefore has to be caught on particularly robust equipment that the organisers often have available. If you have not brought your own equipment with you, the Greenlandic hunting and fishing stores are well-stocked with regard to fishing tackle and equipment. Enquire before departure at your local travel agency.

Fishing licence
Non-residents are required to buy personal fishing licences prior to going fishing, which must be carried when fishing in Greenland. A fishing licence gives the owner the right to fish with a fishing rod, jig or similar handheld tool in accordance with rules that apply to sports fishing in Greenland.

Fishing licenses can both be bought in Greenland (from any bank) and from your home country (prior to your trip) - view guideline to buy Greenlandic fishing licence here.
