Angling

Discover nature’s treasure trove

Angling at Kangerlussuaq
Endless possibilities for sports fishing
Greenland offers the chance of first-class fishing adventures. Both for the angler trying to catch the coveted char and for the ocean’s big game hunters who dream of getting sharks weighing several hundred kilos to take the bait. In such a large and relatively uninhabited country such as Greenland there are lots of virgin fishing spots that are just waiting to be explored by adventurous anglers.

Where the fish will take the bait
The char is found all over Greenland. Organised char fishing takes place at Maniitsoq and Kangerlussuaq. In addition, the majority of tourist offices in South- and West Greenland are able to organise fishing trips or refer to an authorised outfitter specialising in angling.

Sharks can be caught at Uummannaq, Maniitsoq and Tasiilaq. However, angling continues to be a relatively new phenomenon in Greenland. It is therefore a good idea to contact the local tourist office to enquire about opportunities for angling and sports fishing before actually embarking on your trip.

3 good things to remember:

Angling by Greenland Tourism
• Remember the statutory fishing licence, which can be bought by following these guidelines. The fishing licence enables you to fish everywhere in Greenland, with the exception of conservation areas. Prices are DKK 75 for one day (24 hours), DKK 200 for a week and DKK 500 for a month.

• Remember to take your waste with you – do not leave it behind in the vulnerable Arctic nature. In Greenland it is not permitted to clean fish in the river or leave any fish waste near the river.

• Remember that you may only take a maximum of 5 kg (11 lb) of fish or meat with you from Greenland to an EU member state. The fish or meat can be carried in your baggage or forwarded as frozen goods.

Difficulty: Level 2 (Easy but with some challenges)

At level 1 everybody are able to participate.
At level 5, you have to be in good shape and an experienced practioner of the desired activity.
