Sisimiut/Holsteinsborg is Greenland’s second biggest town with approx. 5,300 inhabitants. Sisimiut means “the inhabitants at the foxholes”.
The town is centrally located on Greenland’s west coast, 65 km (40 miles) north of the Arctic Circle, and has a charming mix of old and new buildings. It is a lively and attractive town with good flight and boat connections all year round.
The Municipality of Sisimiut is surrounded by an archipelago and fantastically beautiful fjords, where there are plenty of opportunities for photo-safaris in search of whales or seals. Fishing trips to catch salmon, catfish, rose fish, Greenland halibut, cod, deep-sea prawns and large crabs are also available. Every day sees both large and small fishing vessels landing their catch at Sisimiut.
The town of Sisimiut has a fantastic location between two distinctive mountains: Præstefjeldet to the north and Kællingehætten to the south. The fascinating hinterland is easily accessible and during the summer months you can see Greenland’s wonderful flora on hikes in the fells around the town.
There is also the classic hike to Kangerlussuaq, Greenland’s international airport, which lies at the base of the deep fjord of the same name. It is also possible to go summer skiing on the neighbouring glacier.
During the winter season the area has absolutely the most exciting terrain in Greenland for dogsled driving and snowmobiles. An annual event is the world’s toughest ski race, Arctic Circle Race. The town’s alpine skiing area with its Solbakken ski lift provides superb opportunities for snowboard, ski, slalom, downhill or cross-country on prepared slopes of various lengths.
