Godthåb Fjord – the world’s second largest fjord complex provides a natural point of departure for attractive sailing and hiking trips. The area offers Norse and Inuit ruins and helicopter flights over the beautiful landscape right up to the edge of the Ice Sheet. Culture is flourishing and covers a wide spectrum – from exhibitions of the old and new to experimental theatre, new music and other displays.
Ice Sheet
Helicopter flights to the Ice Sheet with a stop-off on the ice. Participants fly in a Sikorsky S-61 to the Narsap Sermia ice glacier at the base of Godthåb Fjord. The trip also includes a visit to the Norse ruins at Vesterbygden and the small settlement of Kapisillit.
Sailing trips and the world’s oldest mountains
On a sailing trip through Nuuk’s archipelago in Godthåb Fjord in the summer there are good chances of seeing reindeer. There are also visits to Norse ruins. The world’s oldest mountain, which is 3.9 billion years old, is visible en route and the abandoned settlement of Little Narsaq can also be seen.
Humpback whales at close quarters
The fjord is known for its large population of whales, and from June to October there are good chances of seeing these enormous and elegant animals at close quarters.
Greenland’s National Museum
Finish off a tour of the town with a visit to Greenland’s National Museum. Exhibits include the world-famous mummies of a group of women and children from around 1475.
Cultural spots
The old legends and myths are still a source of inspiration to many young artists, musicians, theatre groups and authors. Greenland’s only theatre group for professional artists, Silamiut, provides plenty of opportunities for performances of various types – from mask dancing and drum dancing to songs and more experimental theatre.
Handicrafts then and now
Visit the animal skin workroom and see women sewing "kitta" for the national costume. Visit the craftsmen and hear about the traditions. Almost all of nature’s materials are incorporated into Greenlandic craft traditions.
How is Greenland governed?
Visit the Council Chambers and the Parliament building (Landstingssalen) and hear about the Government of Greenland and the political system of the country.
Many events
Hold your meeting in Nuuk in conjunction with one of the town’s major events. The beginning of August is the traditional date for the Nuuk Marathon, where the route runs through Nuuk’s old and new districts. Throughout the year there are concerts, exhibitions and theatre performances with artists from both Greenland and abroad. Check the events calendar at Katuaq.
Fishing adventures
Fishing trips can be arranged for both amateurs and experienced anglers. There is fishing for cod, rose fish and perhaps Greenland halibut from the boat or from the coast, wherever this is possible. The boat’s captain knows the good fishing spots and plans the trip depending on the local weather conditions and forecast.
