Kangerlussuaq is a perfect base for expeditions on foot, by car or bus or on a mountain bike. Helicopter trips to the inland ice and other trips around the area can be arranged.
The inland ice, Point 660
Just 25 km from Kangerlussuaq the 40 - 50 metre-high vertical ice wall of the inland ice rises. It is possible to get onto the ice and follow the ice wall on a 20 km stretch of gravel path. On the trip there are great opportunities to see reindeer, arctic foxes, musk oxen and birds.
The trip can be combined with a barbecue lunch on the ice against the backdrop of the many colours and sounds of the inland ice.
200 km in on the inland ice
The ghostly and abandoned radar station DEY II is located 200 km in on the inland ice. Here you can stop for lunch and enjoy the tranquillity and grandeur of the Greenlandic landscape. The trip to DEY II is by car or snow-scooter.
Musk ox safari
The area around Kangerlussuaq is home to approximately 5000 musk oxen. A musk ox safari is a great way to see these magnificent animals up close. If you are lucky, you may also see reindeer, hares and arctic foxes.
Granatfjeldet and the military base
The old American base Blue West 8, the local museum and the Granatfjeld mountain are other sights to visit in the area.
Ice cold drink in ice cold surroundings
In December every year, the Hotel Igloo Village is built at the Hotel Kangerlussuaq. It remains here until the rays of the sun become strong enough to melt it.
The Hotel Igloo Village consists of a large central igloo, from which ice tunnels lead to the igloos for sleeping, where double beds made of ice covered with warm reindeer skins and sleeping bags await the guests. A night in an igloo or a reception in the ice bar, drinking out of glasses made of ice, are just some of the spectacular things to do in winter in Kangerlussuaq.
World class Northern Lights
Kangerlussuaq has possibly the most beautiful Northern Lights in the world. On every cold and clear winter evening the beautiful show can be admired. The trip by minibus leaves all artificial lights behind, out into the winter darkness where the Northern lights are sharpest and most beautiful.
Dogsledges or snow-mobiles
Although Kangerlussuaq is not a typical dog disctrict, it is still possible to enjoy a taste of the hunting life with short trips on dogsledges. It is also possible to take a 160 km long trip on a dogsledge from Kangerlussuaq to Sisimiut, staying the night in cabins along the route. In the summer, the same route is a popular walk, while in winter snow mobiles are a popular means of transport.
Fish on the hook
The Robinson River is renowned as an especially good place to fish. Sea trout of 3 - 4 kg can be caught in the foaming torrent. There are trips to the fishing spot by both boat and helicopter. In the winter, ice fishing is possible on the frozen fjord around 15 km outside Kangerlussuaq.
Teambuilding
The terrain is popular for various forms of teambuilding, with Hotel Kangerlussuaq as the base.
Trophy hunting
The numerous musk oxen and reindeer make the area attractive for hunters. In cooperation with outfitters who specialise in hunting, many different types of incentive trips with hunting on the programme can be arranged.
